A few things off the top of my head are, I work in a shop and I have about 10 customers a day telling me that I’m wearing contact lenses, I tell them that I’m not and they won’t believe me! I also get a lot of people saying to me “do you know your eyes are different colours?” Like they think I have been walking around for 23 years and hadn’t realised! I also have had a few “are you blind in one eye?” Which I find very rude, they think that because my blue eye is a very light blue that I might be blind in that eye, I just respond by saying “no I’m not, I have always had perfect vision in both eyes, it’s called heterochromia, look it up! “.. Another thing I don’t like is when one person notices my eyes and then tells all the people they are with and then I have about 4 people looking at me, it can be quite awkward! Apart from the stares I really don’t mind having heterochromia, I love my eyes now that I’m older, I love being unique!

These questions were really philosophical! Kids used to ask me – “Do you see the world in different colours?”

Nowadays the most frequent reactions I get are something like “Are they real?”, “Ohh, you lost a lens”, “Is that inheritable?”… but when I was a child questions were absolutely different.

These questions were really philosophical! Kids used to ask me – “Do you see the world in different colours?”

And now I often wonder about the colours of life that see through my eyes: are they positive, bright, vibrant and full of beautiful tones? Or do I sometimes see the world in pastel way, more or less – negative attitude, or just in contrast black and white. You know, I think that it is important to ask yourself – “What colours of my life do I actually can see?”

After all, there is one meaningful expression – look through rose-coloured glasses. As I believe that it only depends on you – you see what you wish to see.

When I was a kid my mum told me always look into people’s eyes when you talk to them because eyes are ‘the windows of the soul’. The most interesting eye contact I have experienced when I meet other people with heterochromia. Sometimes we look at each other and smile, both of us know why we are smiling. It feels like we have that connection without knowing each other, we both know that feeling when someone freaks out looking at your eyes, or someone adores them or just stairs at you because you are different. I’m happy to be different and being a part of this project made me to be proud of having heterochromia 🙂

So, I guess the project is doing well. Getting exhibited in London “Le Dame” gallery for three months. This was not the piece I was expecting to show, but this was the one they liked. Might be I should consider continuing my nature Heterochromia series, it was also great 🙂 oh well, it is a lifetime project, I am sure I will be exploring it more now.

I am happy anyway. Sometimes you just have to wait, keep on doing what you are doing and you will be rewarded when the time is right.

I had a music teacher in second grade that asked me, “why do you think you’re so special?” I was without a doubt acting out in some fashion (I never took music class very seriously). In response, I told her, “I’m unique because I have two different colored eyes.” Seemly she was asking a rhetorical question… I spent the rest of second-grade shelving books in the library during music class.

I look rather young for my age… and I once took a rather terrible drivers license photo (didn’t really look like me). Under the section of the driver’s license that says eye color mine says: DI (that is what they put in Oklahoma for eye color if your eyes don’t match). But on to the point… I’ve had several instances of trying to buy alcohol where the clerk flat out told me that he didn’t believe my license was actually me… At which point I would ask, “Do you really think I went around looking for and then subsequently found another guy who looks similar to me, who also happens to have two different colored eyes, and then somehow managed to convince him to give me his license all so I could come in here and convince you to sell me a bottle of wine?” They always ended up selling me the wine, which they should have. Would have been a brilliant plan if I wasn’t actually old enough to buy alcohol and I had done all those things.

I’ve had a few girls bring up the movie, Practical Magic where the little girl wishes for a guy who could never exist and one of the things she asks for is that his eyes are different colors… So I’ve been a hit with girls who like that movie.

“Funny the thing is that in flight attendant school a teacher told me that I should really get a correcting-contact lens, otherwise I will never get hired with such weird “condition”.”

When I was a little girl my parents were not fully aware of my “special” eyes, but the neighbours thought there was something wrong with me and so they took me to the doctor who just laughed and told them there’s nothing to worry about. Later on, colleagues at school/highschool/university/flight attendant school often told me that i may have lost a contact lens.. joke was on them obviously as I asked them to help me find it! Funny the thing is that in flight attendant school a teacher told me that I should really get a correcting-contact lens, otherwise I will never get hired with such weird “condition”. I’ve been a successful flight attendant ever since, I have been flying for 5 years now and most of the people who notice my eyes find them fascinating ,so it has never been a minus Although I haven’t been able to be a part of your project (yet) I would like to thank you for making heterochromia seem so special in the eyes of everyone!

When I asked him if he has some interesting stories about Heterochromia he replied “emm such as people asking me if pigeon just pooped in my eye, or what?:)”

People can be cruel sometimes, great to be able to lough about it now 🙂

Heterochromia

I was born in 1968 with this brownish streak in my eye that my mom thought was a problem.  She took me to the doc who stated it was a “birth mark”.  Even later on I worked for an endocrinology clinic who deal with diabetic retinopathy and an ophthalmologist was passing out business cards visiting our clinic to whom I inquired about the “birth mark” and he stated it was a nevus.  Not until my little cuz through marriage got “diagnosed” did I find an actual name for it.

My mom almost named me Bethany but dad said you named the first 2 so I’m naming her Karen. Well through the FB groups that I joined related to heterochromia, I found that some believe it’s a way to find your soul mate in the next life. Well I found mine to whom I’ve been married for over 29 years. I find it ironic that I almost didn’t get a K name but ended up marrying a man whose last name starts and ends with a K. 29 years, there must be something to that story about finding your soul mate in the next life !
